Twin Glacier Trek: Pindari & Kafni Glacial Trek
The twin Glacier trek: Pindari & Kafni, is a relatively easy one that will see you through the virgin Himalayan beauty of the Nanda Devi area in north-eastern Uttaranchal. As there are cute sleepy villages and rest-house all along the route for night halts, anyone who is physically fit can easily complete this trek without much preparation. Our experienced guides would take you through this amazing route and ensure that you successfully complete this awesome trek.
The Pindari & Kafni Glacier trek will take you through different landscapes starting from lush forest paths, gushing waterfalls, verdant meadows, to snow-clad mountains.
All along the route the turquoise fast-flowing waters of meandering Pindari River will accompany you till the last Zero Point, while we will follow the Kafni River from Dwali till we reach the origin of the Kafni stream from the mouth of the Kafni Glacier. Some of the prominent Himalayan peaks that you will witness in awe include Maiktoli, Baljuri, Panwalidwar, Nanda Khat, Changuch and Nanda Kot.
Kathgodam - RanikhetArrive at Kathgodam at 6 am (by boarding the overnight train from Old Delhi Railway Station that departs at 10.40 pm). Travel Your Dreams representative would receive and you would be transferred to our waiting vehicle. Soon we drive past the serene landscape and pass by Bhimtal and Bhowali. We halt at Khairane for a tasty snack of bun-maska and hot pokodas along-with a hot cup of masala tea. Refreshed we drive ahead to reach Majkhali, Ranikhet as you would be checked into a secluded exclusive bungalow with a 180 degree enchanting views of the Kumaon Himalayan ranges. (Drive - 90 kms, approximate 3 hours).
Ranikhet - Kausani - Baijnath - Bageswar - KhurkiaAfter breakfast you would be driven to Khurkia, the last road-head (4-5 hrs drive) through sleepy Kausani dotted with tea estates and thereafter reach the holy township of Bageshwar. Posts our lunch at Bageshwar we drive till Khurkia. From Khurkia a preparatory short trek of 4 kms trek takes you to sleepy Himalayan village of Khati, the last village en-route the Pindari trail. Be greeted by the majestic Maiktoli peak along with the entire Maiktoli range as you enter Dau village. Cross the village and continue into the cute cottage at the outskirts of Khati village and contemplate about the trek ahead. (Trek - 4 kms).
Khati - DwaliTrek from Khati to Dwali (2680 mts). Follow the lush forested path as it surges up-hill. Feel the nature at it very best. En-route after 5 kms trek, take a break at Malladhaur tea shack to cool your heels. Resume your trek and early afternoon reach scenic Dwali, to witness the confluence of Pindari and Kafni Ganga. Check into the rest-house or pitch tents if you are interested. We would be happy to make necessary arrangements. (Trek - 11 kms).
Dwali to PhurkiaIt is a tough day despite the short trek since the trail snakes steeply up-hill. Keep your eyes open to be lucky enough to spot a herd of the elusive Himalayan Tahr. Reaching Purkhia, immediately feel the chill Himalayan winds sweeping past your face. Be amazed at the view of the Nanda Kot peak. Check into the rest house and warm yourself indoor as the fireplace is lighted. (Trek - 5 kms).
Phurkia - Zero Point, Pindari Glacier - DwaliToday is the ultimate day of you trek as you are woken up early to get the best views of the Pindari Glacier. Start off by 4.30 am and soon you are amidst a barren landscape all around. Towering mountain can be seen as our guide assist you identify each of them. The climb is steep as you slowly make your way ahead. By 7.30 reach Dharmananda Giri Baba’s ashram (better known as Pindari Baba). Seek blessing in his temple as he would offer you some breakfast and tea. As your exhaustion subsides, trek the final lap of 2 kms to the Zero Point. Be amazed at the breathtaking scene of the Pindari glacier along with close-up view of the Changuch peak. The tip of Nanda Kot too would be visible, if there are no clouds. You have successfully made it to Pindari. Witness how humbly as a small stream the Pindari River originates from the glacier. After spending some soul seeking moments we make our way down. Have quick lunch at Phurkhia and make your way down to Dwali. (Trek 7 + 7 +5 = 19 km).
Dwali - KhatiaAfter that tiring previous day, gear up for some more adventure as we start from Dwali stepping into the Kafni trail. The turquoise waters of the Kafni gushing through the rocks and bounders in the backdrop of lush surroundings, is indeed a sight to behold. We walk through the forest path and come across many a sheep herds crossing our path. The trail being very narrow, as a golden rule, we step aside for the herds with their tingling bells to pass by safely. By early afternoon we reach Khatia (3200 m). A lone guest house is all of Kathia. Dropping our bags we relax ourselves in this serene place devoid of any habitation. (Trek– 7 kms).
Khatia - Kafni - KhatiaIt is the ultimate day of the trek since today we'll accomplish the challenge of successful completing the 2nd glacier Kafni. To get the best views possible we again start early by 4.30 am through lush meadows. The air is very fresh but as we gain height we tend to be short of breath. However, a short halt soon makes us comfortable as we continue ahead. Mile-upon-miles of green meadows in the backdrop of majestic snow-capped mountains would surely take your breath away. Speechless we continue to trek. By 7.30 am we reach Walliagarh where we rest a while. We also make our offerings and prayers for a successful trek and holy darshan of Kafni. Thereafter, we make our final approach towards Kafni. Mist-filled white-outs are common here as we follow the trail till at one moment time as if stands still. Up ahead of us we see the grayish-black Kanfi Glacier. We walk up to the mouth of the glacier as we cross a snow patch and thereafter do some boulder-hopping to finally reach the mouth of the glacier. It is a different world altogether. We are excited, elated, and happy that tears roll down our cheeks – we have made it to Kafni Glacier successfully. Thereafter, we gradually make our way back towards Khatia. (Trek - 7+7 = 14 kms).
Khatia - Dwali - KhatiAfter trekking for over many days our legs are by now attuned and it follows a rhythm. The trail mostly is now down-hill as we make our way ahead. We stop at Dwali for a quick snack and continue ahead. By 11.30 am we reach Malladhaur Tea Shack and are treated to a quick bowlful of noodle. After resting a while we continue and by 2 pm we reach Khati, to check into the guest house. We light a camp fire at night to celebrate our success. (Trek - 7 + 11 = 18 Kms).
Khati to DhakuriWe climb up-hill towards Dhakuri (2621 meters) and reach the Dhakuri meadows early afternoon to be amazed to see the peaks of Nanda Devi up so close. (Trek - 8 kms).
Dhakuri - Saung - Bageshwar - KathgodamDhakuri to Saung (15 kms) arrive by early afternoon, well in time to board our vehicle to Kathgodam for the train back to New Delhi (Train No.5014, Departure: 20:40 hrs IST). The train reaches Delhi the next morning 05:00 hrs.
