Khalia Peak Trek
Considered a beginners' trek, Khalia trek provides you an ideal introduction to the Himalayan outdoors. Located at a close proximity to the sleepy township of Munsiyari (sub divisional headquarter of Pitthoragarh district) in the eastern Kumaon region, you reach a height of 11,500 feet, the highest point around Munsiyari region, as you make the final ascent to conquer Khalia Peak. This trek initially meandering through oak & rhododendron forest, thereafter, passing through undulating lush alpine meadows, in the backdrop of panoramic views of the snow-clad Kumaon Himalayas would undoubtedly mesmerize you. Witness up close, lines of snow-clad peaks including Panchachuli, Rajrambha, Hardeol, Nanda Kot, and Nanda Devi all standing out tall in amazing settings. This trek starts from Munsiyari.
Kathgodam - VijaypurArrive at Kathgodam at 6 am (by boarding the overnight train from Old Delhi Railway Station that departs at 10.40 pm). Our representative would receive and transfers you to our waiting vehicle. Feel the Himalayan breeze brushing across you face as we drive through Bhimtal, Bhowali, Bajnath and finally reaching Vijaypur in approximately 6 hours. Make yourself comfortable at our eco-resort set within a lush Pine forest amidst chirping birds all around. If you are lucky, get your maiden view of the Panchachuli peaks as you soak yourself into the serene environment of our resort. As dusk set in, a campfire ignite your spirits as you contemplate your trek ahead.
Vijaypur - MunsiyariAfter a hearty breakfast we start off towards Munsiyari. We drive through a forested road and soon pass by Chakori from where you get to see the shining Panchachuli peaks in crystal clear visibility. Thereafter, we continue till we stop by at Birthi for a quick tea break and if you are interested, take a short hike for a closer view of the Birthi Falls. Thereon, as we start scaling up the Himalayan high road and the landscape too drastically changes from lush green to a barren landscape as we approach Kala Muni at a height of 2748 meters. Paying our obeisance at the Kali Temple at Kala Muni top, we descend into the yawning Munsiyari Valley. We check into our eco-resort as our eyes get automatically glued into the panoramic view of the Panchachuli and countless other peaks in glorious settings.
Munsiyari - Munsiyari Bugyal - MunsiyariAs we gain considerable height, we acclimatize and post breakfast we attend a quick discourse about the legends of Munsiyari as well as the greater Himalayas. Thereafter, we undertake a introductory 3 km trek to Munsiyari bugyal (2300 meters), which is a picturesque alpine meadow offering amazing views of the Kumaon Himalayas. We return back by lunch-time and late afternoon we explore the cute Munsiyari market and taste some local momos. We also visit the Tribal museum - a storehouse of art and artifacts representing the culture and ethos of the people of this region.
Munsiyari - BhujaniPost breakfast we are dropped at the starting point of the Khalia trek and soon with our backpacks strapped in our shoulders we start off towards Bhujani. Initially we scale through a lush oak forest and are thoroughly overwhelmed at the silence, which sometimes is broken by some bird calls. The steep climb tires us on often we stop to catch our breath. Soon the oak forest is given away to numerous dwarfed rhododendrons growing amidst mile-upon-miles of green carpeted alpine meadows. By late afternoon we reach our beautiful campsite situated at a height of 10,000 feet. Soon our tents are pitched as we are awed at the scenic vistas of the surroundings. Our open kitchen fire is lighted as a tasty dinner. As dinner is cooking you witness such a clear star-studded sky which you have perhaps not seen before. (Trek - 8 kms)
Bhujani - KhaliaPull yourself out of the sleeping bag early as a hot cup of tea is offered to you in your tent. Sipping the cup of tea we watch the warm sun rising in these mesmerizing settings amidst snow-clad peaks. After freshening up, our cook dishes out some freshly cooked parathas that you relish. Soon, be inundated by the bleats of a huge sheep herd as they grazes through the lush meadows accompanied by a few whistling shepherds. The sheep guard dogs would approach you barking as you end up offering a few scraps. It is a feeling unforgettable. We unfold our tents and make way towards Khalia. Surging slowly we finally trek over 6 km to reach our awesome campsite at Khalia, which offer panoramic views of snow-clad Himalayas all around. If it is early summer you may be walking the last patch through ankle deep snow. Pitching our camp, we can feel the icy Himalayan breeze gushing through our tent. Be at one with nature and soak in all the possible solitude. (Trek - 6 kms)
Khalia - OkhladungaWake up early and start climbing the last few meters to be at Khalia Peak to witness an amazing sun-rise and be amazed as the first rays creates a dazzling effect as it kisses the snow-peaks. You have done it - your first successful peak at 11,500 meters. The feeling that get is hard to explain, you have to be there to experience it. Post a quick breakfast we start descending our way towards our next destination Okhladunga where we set up our camp amidst a beautiful forest.(Trek - 16 kms )
Okhladunga - MunsiyariIt is our last trekking day as we close camp post breakfast and make our way towards Musiyari. Our vehicles would be there to pick you up and we drive back to our eco-resort at Munsiyari where you can wash, change and relax. (Trek - 8 kms)
Munsiyari - RanikhetWe bid farewell to scenic Munsiyari and make our way towards Ranikhet. En-route we stop at Bageshwar to witness the confluence of rivers Saryu and Gomti rivers and also offer our prayers at the revered Baghnath temple. Thereafter, we continue our drive till we stop by a tea estate at Kausani to sip a cup of herbal tea. The view of the snow-clad mountains from Kausani is breathtaking. Finally, we make our way ahead, and, by late afternoon reach 'Queen's Meadow' Ranikhet. We check ourselves into one of our secluded exclusive bungalow with mesmerizing views of the Himalayan ranges. An evening campfire soon is ignited as we sit by and reflect back our overall trekking experience promising ourselves to be back again to follow another trekking trail. (240 kms drive)
Ranikhet - KathgodamOn our final day in Kumaon, post breakfast we make a trip to visit the Asia's highest Golf Course and also offer our prayers at the nearly Kalika Temple, thanking her for a successful trek. After our lunch we make our way back to Kathgodam to take the train to back to Delhi.
# Basis your request this Khalia Peak Trek can be cut short by one day and adjusting the extra day at Ranikhet.
## There is also the option of leaving Ranikhet early after breakfast and driving to the Corbett National Park for a quick wild life safari. The train to Delhi departs at 20.40 pm from Kathgodam.
